A Farewell to Geekly

So, if you’re a geek in the Seattle area, you’ve probably at least heard of Seattle-Geekly.  And if not? Well, luckily for you, podcasts are available on iTunes for free so you have the ability to familiarize yourself if you so wish. I highly recommend doing so. Well worth a listen.  Little background from Shannon and Matt themselves:

“Seattle Geekly is a bi-weekly podcast that aspires to be about all of geek culture, a daunting task so most of the time it is about things that creators and producers Shannon Flowers and Matt Hammond are interested in and want to talk about. It is a local podcast with a global appeal. Seattle Geekly covers topics ranging from books to movies, TV to tabletop gaming, video games, comics and everything in between. Shannon and Matt are Seattle natives who grew up nerdy and have finally found a way to try and give something back to the community that has meant so much to them over the years. If Seattle Geekly can hook one person up to one book, movie, TV show, game or event that they would not have otherwise found it will be a success!”

Seattle-Geekly made its first appearance in February 2009 and has kept us on the up and up of what’s new in geek news ever since. But all good things must come to an end. On April 29th, 2011, Shannon and Matt posted the following to announce that Seattle-Geekly would be recording it’s last and final podcast on May 12th:

“There is no easy way to do this, so here it is; We have reached the point where we are going to have to lower the curtain on Seattle Geekly. The demands of producing the show have exceeded our available resources, both financially and in terms of time. This is a heart rending decision for us and one that we did not come to easily…” (Seattle Geekly, An Important Announcement)

Loyal listeners responded with both support and understanding and offered any help possible in an effort to keep the podcast going. Regretfully, the needs required don’t seem to be something that can plausibly be met at this time. However, because of such a warm response,  they have stated that they will try to keep their events calendar going as well as their book recommendations on ‘Good Reads’ and will remain tweeting under @seattlegeekly.

Honestly, since I read their announcement on the 29th, I’ve been re-listening to the podcast (I know that shows what an utter dork I am, so you can judge me all you want) and realized all the little things I picked up from these past two years just by letting it play while I drive or go on in the background while I’m working on one project or another. For one, I’d completely forgotten that the only reason I knew about Audible.com was because of Shannon Flowers talking about having the luxury of being able to listen to books while she works. There are times where audio books have been the only way I’ve been able to get through a book just because of a crazy schedule. The countless topics covered in each podcast–from board-gaming to broadcasting from conventions to parenting a geek child–Seattle Geekly’s contribution to the community has been invaluable. We’ll be sad to it go.

“We are also encouraging people to call our voicemail line (206)201-2352 and leave a message to be played on our final podcast on May 12.” (Seattle Geekly, Monday (not) News)
