03.31.11 // Nancy and Belle Holder To Be Special Guests at GeekGirlCon!

New York Times Bestselling Author Nancy Holder and her coauthor and daughter, Belle Holder, have accepted GeekGirlCon’s invitation to appear as special guests. The Holders will attend the entire convention and are looking forward to a fantastic, stimulating weekend among their fellow geek girls.

The Holders have sold two short stories to DAW about a magical time-traveling mouse named Lightning Merriemouse-Jones. The team appears at SF cons and signs as a team for charity in the San Diego Comic-con’s California Browncoats booth.

Nancy Holder’s Wicked saga, co-written with Debbie Viguié, has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, and been optioned by DreamWorks. She has also written dozens of episode guides, novels, short fiction, and essays in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville, Firefly, Saving Grace, and other “universes.” She has a new essay in Whedonistas: A Celebration the Worlds of Joss Whedon by the Women Who Love Them. She is also the writer on Moonstone’s Domino Lady comic book.

“Buffy turned 30 this year,” Nancy says “I wish she could come to GeekGirlCon to celebrate with us.”

Belle Holder’s application to exhibit at the San Francisco Maker Fair (May 21 and 22) has been approved, and she will attend. She was a contestant on American Inventor, and placed in the kids’ division at the Bubonicon masquerade dressed as a Stormtrooper photographer. She is currently participating in the San Diego City Science Fair, presenting her findings on cockroach navigation. She is crossing her fingers that she makes it and passes to State. She is also involved in gaming, costuming, model rocketry, filmmaking, and comic books.

“I’m really looking forward to GeekGirlCon,” Belle says. “I expect it will be geektastic!”

Belle even has a message about Geek Girls: (more…)

03.18.11 // Talisman Tournament Cancelled

Unfortunately, we are canceling our planned Talisman Tournament. There was not a substantial enough demand by our audience to play Talisman, and no one likes to throw a party where no one shows up. This makes us sad.

We are currently working on a restructure of our gaming department, due to staffing changes, and plan on making sure that we’re playing what you demand at our future gaming events.

In the meantime, GeekGirlCon suggests that if you are in the Lacey/Olympia area to stop at Olympic
Comics & Cards
and support their amazing business.

Thank you,

Who: You, geek girl. Anywhere with an internet connection.

Seattle, WA, February 2011 — GeekGirlCon, Nerds in Babeland, and Geek Girls Network present Geek Girls Edit Wikipedia, an activity any geek girl with an internet connection can participate in. For one amazing weekend, we are encouraging geeky women to go on Wikipedia and create and edit articles about our favorite geeky topics.

Wikipedia is the 7th most visited website; and more women’s knowledge needs to be added to this resource.

03.8.11 // GeekGirlCon Climbs the Big Climb March 20th

GeekGirlCon_BigClimb

GeekGirlCon Climbs the Big Climb

On March 20th GeekGirlCon will be participating in the Big Climb; this event is the largest fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Washington/Alaska Chapter. On this magnanimous day volunteers will climb/run up the Columbia Center which just so happens to be the tallest skyscraper in downtown Seattle. There are 69 flights of stairs, 788 feet of vertical elevation, and a magnificent view once the top is reached. There is a metaphor here!

GeekGirlCon is getting involved in the Big Climb because the event is inspiring, big in heart, and crucial in its purpose. All proceeds go directly towards LLS’ mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Additionally, funds are used to educate, advocate, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. This is an amazing way to support those who are fighting blood cancers while making people think about their own health as some face a big physical challenge that is small in comparison to those who struggle with cancer.

Right now we are asking people to donate online whatever they can afford to give, if even it is 10 dollars. If times are tough, we of course understand, and please feel free to let others know about this event. Visit our GeekGirlCon Big Climb team page to donate. Just click on either the red Make a Gift, or Donate, link.

For more information on the Big Climb visit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society website.
